Looking for a great, high megapixel camera that will meet practically all of your everyday photography needs? Well, look no further than the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. This camera looks great and you could mistake it for a D-SLR camera. What's really incredible about the SX40 HS is its long 35x zoom range, coupled with that 12-megapixel camera resolution. Yes, you read that right - a 35x zoom range - which translates to a very powerful camera with telephoto reach. Read on and find out more about it.

Camera Optical Zoom

1. Design and Construction

What does the SX40 HS look like? Well, as you can see from the picture, the unit itself is neither compact nor light. Its dimensions are 3.6 by 4.8 by 4.2 inches (HWD) and it weighs in at 1.3 pounds. It's competitor, the Nikon Coolpix P500 is slimmer and lighter by comparison.

Camera Optical Zoom

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS comes with a metal body with a few plastic elements. I like the fact that there's a very deep handgrip which lets you hold the camera firmly. Throw in the SX40's optical stabilization system and it means you can get a sharp photo at the extreme end of its zoom range. I tried zooming almost 35x on the SX40 HS, without a tripod or monopod, and my pictures still came out pretty good and sharp.

2. Optics and Resolution

When it comes to long range zoom, very few non-digital SLR type cameras can match the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. The 35x zoom range is better than many digital SLRs equipped with telephoto lenses and is certainly one of the selling points of the camera.

With its 12 megapixel resolution, you'd expect that photos taken with the SX40 HS to be exceptionally sharp. Incidentally, I got to know about the Imatest software suite - which can be used to measure cameras' performance in terms of image sharpness and noise. So here's what I did - to evaluate sharpness, I shot several photos of a test chart and analyzed them using a center-weighted algorithm. The SX40 HS averaged 1,836 lines per picture height, which surpasses the 1,800-line benchmark that qualifies an image as being acceptably sharp.

I've tried many cameras in the past, including the Kodak EasyShare Max Z990 which packs a 30x zoom lens, records a slightly higher 1,946 lines. So in terms of image sharpness, the SX40 HS is not the best - but I think its other features more than make up for that.

3. User Controls

Many cameras have very obscure or weird control placements. The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS doesn't have this problem. There are ample control buttons on the SX40's body - a top-mounted dial lets you change between shooting modes, and there's a neat rear four-way jog wheel to scroll through menus, adjust ISO, set exposure compensation, activate the self-timer, and so forth.

The Canon designers obviously got the design of the menu system correct. In fact, the Canon SX40 HS menu system is one of the best I've seen around - comparable even to the top end DSLR cameras. You can quickly access most of the common controls you'd encounter in a digital camera, without having to click all around menu after menu. I also like the fact that the SX40's pop-up flash is manually operated. All I need to do is flip it up when you'd like to use it. Enthusiasts who want a better flash can fit in units like the Canon Speedlite flash, using the dedicated hot shoe.

4. Battery Life

The Canon PowerShot SX40 boasts a very good and long lasting battery life. I could be outdoors shooting photos like no one's business and the battery would still be OK. This contrasts strongly to some of the older Canon cameras I have, where the battery just dies on you when you're lining up for a very important shot.

5. Storage and Transfer

OK, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS supports all manner of media cards - Secure Digital, Secure Digital High Capacity and Secure Digital Extended Capacity. The camera records 1080p24 QuickTime video - which in my opinion, looks quite good. To copy photos and video into your PC, you can plug the camera into your computer via mini USB to copy the files. Alternatively, you can connect the camera to an HDTV via mini HDMI. My family loves to do that - plug a digital camera to a huge TV and enjoy the photos and video.

6. Shortcomings

I feel that the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a great camera - but it falls short in a few areas. For one thing, the camera isn't cheap! And although it has a powerful 35x zoom lenses, I could tell that it's performance in low light is not so good - especially compared to its competitors like the Nikon Coolpix P500, which captures clean images in as little as one quarter the light as the SX40.

Conclusion

All in all, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a great camera with a powerful 35x zoom range. It has a host of innovative features which allow you to take picture after picture with ease. The quality of the photo shots are way above average and is certainly one of the better digital cameras in its class. Do check it out!

You want to buy a new digital camera but you wonder what all these abbreviations and strange terms are and what do they mean? Here are a few which I have tried to explain in a simple way.

Camera Optical Zoom

AE Lock. This means Auto Exposure Lock and means that you can point to your subject matter, get a light reading, then swing the camera to set up the complete picture, still retaining that setting.

Camera Optical Zoom

Aperture. Size of the variable opening in the lens that controls the amount of light that passes through the lens to the sensor (CCD) and which is usually expressed as an f/number.The higher the f/number the smaller aperture, and the lower the f/number the larger the aperture. Also controls depth of field.

Aperture Priority. This is a semi-manual setting in some cameras. The user sets the aperture for the depth of field they want and the camera sets the shutter speed to obtain correct exposure.

Auto Focus. Most digital cameras have an auto-focus mode which focuses the lens

Battery. Cameras come with different types of batteries which power the camera. Each manufacturer tends to have their own variation on this and batteries are not usually interchangeable between cameras.

Bracketing. Bracketing shots is where a photographer takes shots of the same scene three times or more at different exposures. This can be done automatically on some cameras.

Card reader. Device that is used to connect the computer with your memory card

CCD or charged coupled device. This refers to the chip inside the camera which is used to record image information (on a non-digital camera this would be the film).

Light hits the CCD when a photo is taken, and then the analog CCD converts the information to digital.

Contrast. This is the difference between the lightest and darkest part of a photo.

Depth of Field. The distance between the nearest point and farthest point, that is sharp and in focus. This varies with aperture setting. A small aperture will give greater depth of field than a large aperture.

Digital Zoom. Some cameras will provide digital zoom which really means that it "zooms" into the center part of the image and enlarges the pixels. This causes " noise" or poor resolution. Optical zoom is far superior.

DPI Dots per inch. Printers define the sharpness of an image by DPI. A figure of 1200 dpi, or higher is required for printing photographs.

Exposure. Exposure is a combination of how long the shutter is open and how wide the aperture is.

EXIF. The exchangeable image file. This is used by cameras to record data of a shot such as date, time taken, exposure etc which can be read sometimes in the camera or in software. This is useful for knowing what was happening when a picture was taken.

Exposure Control. Controlling exposure settings through shutter speed and aperture is important to serious photographers. Cheaper digital cameras will only shoot in auto mode. If you feel that you might want to take photography more seriously at some point this needs to be considered.

Focal length.Focal length describes the magnification of the lens. The greater the focal length, the greater the magnification.

F-Stop (or f/number or stop). The size of the opening in the diaphragm which allows light into the camera

Histogram.A histogram is a graph which shows image tones or a graph of brightness. Can be used to check exposure of a shot to see if you need to adjust and shoot again.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). A format, that that allows the camera to squeeze a large picture into a small amount of memory. This is the most common system used by digital cameras

LCD Liquid Crystal Display. The majority of digital cameras have a screen at the back of the camera which can be used for viewing shots taken or sometimes as a viewfinder. A heavy user of battery power!

Macro.This is the camera mode for taking extreme close-ups.

Manual mode. This is found on top end cameras and is used by experienced photographers as this gives full control over shutter speed and aperture.

Megapixel. This is a million pixels and can describe the sensor's capacity. Megapixels define the quality of your image. More megapixels means a better and sharper picture or that it can be enlarged without losing quality.

Memory Card.The majority of digital cameras store pictures taken onto memory cards which can be removed and the pictures transferred to your computer. Cards are of various shapes and sizes but all do the same job.

Memory Stick. Memory Stick is a removable flash memory card format, launched by Sony in October 1998 and is also used in general to describe the whole family of Memory Sticks.

Optical zoom. This is a true zoom that brings you closer to the subject without moving by magnifying the image. It is preferable and superior to digital zoom. It is recommended to get at least 3x optical zoom.

Pictbridge. Pictbridge is a standard technology that allows the transfer of images direct from a camera to a compliant printer, bypassing the computer.

Pixels. A pixel, meaning picture element, is the base component or building block of a digital image and can have color and tone.

There can be several million "building blocks" in an image.

RAW .The name is to identify the virtually raw data (has had no internal processing by the camera) image file format.

Resolution. A measure of an image expressed as picture size or pixel (megapixel) size or dots per inch on a printed image i.e. the more pixels there are in an image the sharper the picture will be. This is usually shown as, for example, 1200 x 1800 which relates to height and width.

Shutter priority. This is a semi-manual mode and the opposite of aperture priority.

The photographer chooses the shutter speed and the camera sets the correct aperture for the conditions.

Useful for action shots or the need to blur shots.

SLR. Single Lens Reflex is a camera which has a mirror that reflects the image onto a pentaprism and then on to the viewfinder screen. This means you see what the camera sees and is useful for framing your shots accurately.

The mirror reflexes out of the way when you take the picture.

Secure Digital (SD) is a flash memory card format developed for use in portable devices.

Sensor or CCD.An electronic chip, or light sensor which contains light- sensitive pixels and which records the image when you take a picture.

Shutter Speed. Speed of the shutter as it opens and close to allow light onto the sensor. It is expressed in fractions of a second i.e.1/60, 1/250

TIFF Tagged Image File Format. TIFF is an image file format that does not lose any quality when it is saved and compressed.

Tripod. If you are taking landscape or portrait photos a tripod is essential for clear, sharp photos in order to reduce camera shake and blurring of images.

USB. Universal Serial Bus. This is a standard interface on all computers that allows accessories to be connected to the computer while it is turned on.

The Asus 1215T is yet another netbook with 12.1 inch screen but features 1.7GHz Neo processor and ATi HD 4250 graphics card. In these tests, the GPU is fully capable of rendering 1080p HD video playback.

12.1 Megapixel

It has a black piano finish around the 12-inch bezel that attracts a lot of fingerprints, but since this is not a touchscreen device, you would not be touching those areas a lot. I loved its two tone black-on-silver finish but was disappointed to see average built quality. Just don't expect Apple-like built quality here. Its screen bezel also has a 1.3 mega pixel webcam with a slider cover to protect it from dust.

12.1 Megapixel

Coming to its keyboard, important keys like enter key are smaller in size compared to Asus Eee PC 1201T - its predecessor. I had no problems using its touchpad, but the single bar below the touchpad requires a firm press in order to register a 'click'.

Performance wise, it is much better than most of the single core Atom notebooks out there with GMA 3150 graphics. It comes with an AMD Neo II K125 processor and ATi Radeon HD 4250 HD graphics which are certainly better than the Atom and GMA 3150 combo. It also comes with 320GB HDD, 2GB RAM, VGA port and 3 USB ports along with an HDMI port. My netbook came preloaded with ExpressGate - a quick boot Linux OS. Fortunately, Asus has made Windows 7 drivers available on their website. I installed the basic version of Windows 7 and did not experience any problems.

Now, here is a downside of having too much power in a netbook - poor battery life. It delivered 3.5 hours in my YouTube video test and in normal web surfying it gave me around 4.5 hours. This is okay for me, but may not be enough for the netbook-ers that are used to 10 plus hours of runtime. Asus Eee PC 1215T is priced at 400 dollars, which is around 50-60 dollar expensive than the Atom powered 10-inch netbooks. Even though its built quality is not exceptional, it certainly has more power than the 10-inchers.

The underwater digital functionality of the Lumix TS3 is one of four main selling points for the rugged camera. Additionally, the TS3 is a shockproof camera up to 6.6 feet, according to the MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock test standard. Essentially that just means the camera is internally prepared to withstand a fall from a moderate distance. It still gets dings and the lens is capable of scratches, but the vital components of the camera are safe.

But regardless of ruggedness, the most important part of a camera should always be the picture quality. With some setting adjustments, the 12.1 megapixel underwater digital camera with a LEICA DC 28mm wide-angle lens takes wonderful outdoor pictures and fantastic 1920 x 1080 AVCHD video. But there are distinct drawbacks.

The flash is either on or off, and that leads to extremely flash-washed pictures in low-light situations. The IAuto mode and Active Outdoor Scene modes lend greater functionality to the generally abysmal point-and-shoot automatic modes, though the best decision is to always find the proper settings manually. The IAuto mode is geared towards outdoors shots, so it can lead to grainy photos otherwise, thanks to the high isolation and fast shutter speeds. That being said, the fast-motion action pictures with this waterproof digital camera are exceptional to anything else in the market, thanks in part to the high-speed CCD sensor and Venus Engine FHD.

The 3D photo mode feels like more of a gimmick and less of a practical feature, though it is available for a user with time to take the 20 panning shots necessary - and the VIERA 3D television at home to view it on. The Lumix TS3 does offer some incredible shutter speed options for night shots - up to a 60-second exposure - that are rare for regular point-and-shoots, much less an underwater digital camera. The 2.7-inchd LCD screen minimizes glare but still doesn't do the pictures justice. The best results always come after being cleaned up a little on the computer, though the white balance, auto-focus features, and other quick adjustments made available on this underwater digital camera do allow for the user to take great pictures pre-final adjustments.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 is the top in its class for a handheld camera. But it's also in a rare class. It's an underwater camera, a shockproof camera, a dustproof camera, and a freezeproof camera. And after all that, it's still a great digital camera - for the right lifestyle. The versatility of the camera does lead to some sacrifices when it comes to basic indoor shooting, but the overall quality, durability, and feature-list of the Lumix DMC-TS3 makes it the best choice for an active owner.
