Canon Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Affordable point-and-shoot digital cameras like the Nikon Coolpix L20 usually don't offer very good image quality but this 10MP digital camera delivers exactly that along with the ability to use AA size batteries. Lets take a closer look at this digital camera model.

Camera Optical Zoom

Design: Since the Nikon Coolpix L20 uses two AA sized batteries the camera body is a bit thicker and bulkier compared to other digital cameras that use proprietary li-ion batteries. Thankfully, Nikon have formed the grip around the bulkier battery compartment making the camera easier to hold even with wet hands. Utilizing a large three inch LCD, minimal controls and a shiny surface finish the camera looks great and feels good in your hands. At 4.8 ounces it is quite lightweight.

Camera Optical Zoom

Specifications: The Nikon Coolpix L20 offers 10 megapixel images with a 3.6x optical zoom and a 38mm-136mm focal length lens (35mm equivalent). This allows it to zoom in a bit further and take slightly wider than average images. The camera uses SD and SDHC memory cards and two AA sized batteries. This means that you can use normal off-the-shelf alkaline batteries or rechargeable ni-MH batteries. The camera takes JPEG still images and even allows you to use the optical zoom while taking 640x480 movies running at 30fps, something which not many digital cameras allow you to do. With digital image stabilization the camera is surprisingly rock-steady and lasts a respectable 230 shots on two AA-sized batteries.

Features & Performance: If you're used to pressing the shutter button half-way to auto-focus first then the Nikon Coolpix L20 is extremely easy to use with pretty fast shutter speed. While the camera does offer various image-recording modes you cannot manually adjust exposure or ISO. Instead the camera automatically adjusts ISO to suit current lighting conditions. Thankfully, the camera is intelligent enough to create great images which are sharp in detail and have accurate exposure. Other automatic features of note include a Blink mode that warns if somebody blinked while the shot was being taken and a guided panorama mode for easy panorama shots. All in all the Nikon Coolpix L20 is a surprisingly good point-and-shoot digital camera with intelligent automatic functions. It should suit any new point-and-shoot user or just the average tourist, thanks to its ease of use and easy to get AA sized batteries.

HS System with 10-megapixel CCD sensor with high sensitivity and DIGIC 4

HS System is a powerful combination of high sensitivity sensor and DIGIC 4 processor can provide excellent functional recovery even in low light conditions. Even higher ISO sensitivity can reduce the use of flash and offer higher shutter speeds to reduce shaky shots even in the presence of a moving subject.

28 mm wide-angle lens, 5x zoom with image stabilization Hybrid (Hybrid IS)

The original high-quality Canon lens, from 28-140 mm (35mm equivalent) ensures flexibility and sharpness. The Optical Image Stabilization corrects camera shake up to 4 stops, while the image stabilizer Hybrid (Hybrid IS) allows sharper images when shooting macro.

LCD swiveling 7.0-cm (2.8"), electronic level and optical viewfinder

The swivel LCD PureColor II VA offers a yield optimal color and contrast and can be set for shooting angles unthinkable. The display displays an electronic level indicator that helps verify that the camera is perfectly level, while the optical viewfinder lets you compose your shot according to their own personal style.

Total control

The capture in RAW format provides full manual control during the post-shot editing, also compatible with the software Digital Photo Professional (DPP) of Canon's digital SLR users to integrate the PowerShot G12 into the workflow exists.

HDMI with HD movies

In addition to ensuring the highest picture quality, the Canon G12 is capable of capturing HD video at 720p with stereo sound. The movies can be played without losing quality through the HDMI terminal.

High Dynamic Range Mode

The scenes in high contrast, a conventional digital camera will struggle to capture the detail in shadows and bright light. With the camera on a tripod, High Dynamic Range Shooting mode captures multiple exposures of the same scene and combines them to get a scene rich in detail even in the case of high contrast.

Smart Camera

Smart Auto Scene Detection uses technology to detect the appropriate scene between 28 possible types to get the best result. Smart Flash Exposure controls the use and power of the flash.

Multi-Aspect Shooting

You can take pictures in a wide range of formats including 3:2, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:5 to ensure a perfect composition when shooting without the need for post-processing.

Wide range of accessories

Canon PowerShot G12 supports a wide range of accessories including an optional adapter for the lens filter for adding filters 58 mm. A special jack lets you use Canon Speedlite while the waterproof case protects your camera up to 40 meters.

As a hardcore amateur photographer, I must admit I fell in love with the Canon cameras and wouldn't switch to anther manufacturer for anything in the world. I noticed I'm not the only one with this fetish, as I visited Disney World I noticed that PowerShots were the most common cameras. So here is my list of favorite Canon cameras. Any of these are excellent choices.

12.1 Megapixel

1. SD1100IS

12.1 Megapixel

Equipped with a 8MP image sensor, this baby offers great image stabilization, longer zoom level (38-114 mm) and a better design. It comes in colors and can be great gifts.

2. SD870IS

This model is the one for you if you want a wider-angle lens. Except the lack of the viewfinder, making it rather impossible to use in a bright light, you will simply love all its facilities.

3. SD770IS

This is supposed to be an update of the SD1100IS model, costs -ish more and doesn't come in colors. Other than longer battery lifetime I couldn't see any difference to its predecessor, hence I rated it lower.

4. SD950IS

With a titanium body and a 12.1 MP sensor, this camera is simply gorgeous. An unique function that comes out of the box is the ability to put together panoramic images. I haven't rated it higher because it is a bit too pricey for the functionalities it offers.

5. SD890IS

This one is the most expensive in the PowerShot ELPH series. It comes with a 10MP sensor and a whopping 5x optical zoom. So if you need a camera with a long zoom lens, then this is definitely the one for you.

6. SD790IS

I like the SD770IS model better than this one. The 790IS comes with 3x zoom lens and 10 megapixel sensor, which is quite normal for a 2009 camera. The downside is the lack of an optical viewfinder. The only thing that makes this camera stand out is perhaps the 3" LCD display.

7. SD1000IS

This model has been replaced by SD1100IS, which is on the very top of my preferences. It doesn't come with image stabilization, which I would consider an important feature. It's quite a nice camera, that's why I put it in this favorites list, but no longer worth buying: if you like it, get its successor!
